The Lilac Room was originally the parlor, so, in keeping with local traditions, it was kept closed except for very special guests, or for formal occasions like weddings, funeral wakes (Harrell House Bed and Breakfast has no ghosts) and Christmas. Minnie and Jim were married in the Lilac room, by Mr Clark, the Presbyterian minister from Hopewell Church down the road toward Burgaw. My mother Elizabeth and my father Walter Ludlam were also married there.

The present pine floor and the bead-board ceiling are original, though the fireplace is a replacement. You may keep the shutters closed for privacy, or open to catch the morning light.

Needing a bathroom for the Lilac room, we replaced the large north window with a door to a new bump-out, and you will see that one bathroom wall is the old weathered clapboard exterior of the original parlor. The new bathroom has a whirlpool tub and a lavatory set into the base of an old treadle sewing machine.
